Under U.S. law known as the "Wet-foot, Dry-foot" policy, Cubans stopped at sea are usually sent back home, but Cubans who reach U.S. soil are generally allowed to stay.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commissioned called police and medical units to a boat ramp on Big Coppitt Key, about 10 miles northeast of Key West, at about 4 p.m. Saturday.

The sheriff's office said eight of the Cubans were taken to Lower Keys Medical Center on Stock Island for treatment of minor ailments. U.S. Customs and Border Protection took custody of the Cubans.

Customs officials could not be immediately reached for comment.
